Why You Should Give Your Staff a Mental Health Day Off Work
Why You Should Give Your Staff a Mental Health Day Off Work Your leave policies may include sick leave, maternity and paternity leave, compassionate leave and even bereavement leave. But does it include mental health sick leave? We all know the mental health of our employees is paramount and a lot of companies are being proactive and robust about the way they deal with employees mental health. Some of the things companies are doing include providing a healthy work environment, supporting employees with mental health issues and talking to staff a lot more. But did you know you could allow your staff to take a mental health sick day? Thats exactly what Madalyn Parker did and the response she got from her boss went viral. When the CEO responds to your out of the office email about taking sick leave for mental health and reaffirms your decision. ?? pic.twitter.com/6BvJVCJJFq madalyn (@madalynrose) June 30, 2017 High five to Madalyn Parker Ben Congleton. Mental health just like physical health is health. She took a mental health day. Hes her CEO. pic.twitter.com/CuKMpu6S1t Dr. Rosie P Bingham (@TigerBingham) July 12, 2017 So why should you be offering mental health sick days as part of your leave policy? Well because mental health is just as important as a persons overall health. If your employees donât proactively address their mental health, they wonât be able to perform at their best. In fact, the Center for Prevention and Health estimates mental illness and substance abuse issues cost employers up to $105 billion annually. Reduced productivity, absenteeism and increased healthcare costs are just a few of the ways mental health issues cost employers money. Its estimated that only 17% of the U.S. population is functioning at optimal mental health, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates. And 1 in 5 people experience a diagnosable mental health condition at any given time. In the UK, according to Office for National Statistics Labour Force Survey statistics, last year, Britons took 137 million sick days. Of these, 15.8 million days were for a stated mental health issue whether that is stress, depression, anxiety or a more serious condition such as manic depression and schizophrenia By contrast, 34 million days were lost to minor illnesses, like coughs and colds. But there is no legal difference between taking a mental health sick day and a day off for a physical problem like a back problem. Employers are legally required to protect the health and safety of those at work and this includes mental health problem if it affects a persons day-to-day life. A mental health day is where an employee does not come to work and takes a sick day for reasons other than physical illness and are more common place in countries like America and New Zealand. Some people may consider a mental health day to be when someone simply does not feel like coming in to work, but the most accurate use of this term is related to true mental illness rather than a desire to skip work. The difficulty with most mental illnesses is that they dont show any outwardly physical symptoms like a broken limb or sickness. And while we do know some employees do feign illness to blag a day off work, its not always a good idea to doubt an employees sickness. We also know that there is a huge stigma around mental health and quite a lot of ignorance from other members of staff and managers when it comes to dealing with an employees mental health so its even more important that those who suffer from conditions like anxiety and depression are fully supported at work, or even while theyre taking time off work to recover instead of being judged. Jessica Williams, Managing Director of Sidekicks said: Giving your staff the time and space they need to feel well is very important. You hire people because they add value to your business, so valuing their mental health and respecting their needs at challenging times is beneficial to everyone; employer and employee alike. Overcoming the challenges of mental health in the workplace is something were very aware of at Sidekicks. Our not-for-profit programme, Work to Recover, supports people returning to work after mental illness by providing them with practical support and coaching, so it is something we have thought about more or less from day one. The mental health charity Mind has lots of advice and a guide to improving mental health at work which can be accessed by anyone. After all, unless youre a medic, no-one is an expert and youll be surprised just what little effort it takes to make sure your employees are well both physically and mentally.

Exactly What to Do to Stay Fresh on a Long Haul Flight - Classy Career Girl
Exactly What to Do to Stay Fresh on a Long Haul Flight Exactly What to Do to Stay Fresh on a Long Haul Flight Itâs hard to maintain your stress-free look when youâre traveling. Thereâs little to no time for touch-ups when youâre catching a flight and hauling your luggage. In addition, the dry cabin air, delayed flight schedules, and jet lag never fails to dampen your look. But in spite of the hassle, there are several things that you can do to stay fresh while in transit. Here are some of my tried and tested pre-flight and in-flight beauty tips. Exactly What to Do to Stay Fresh on a Long Haul Flight Pre-Flight 1. Drink Coconut Water The dry cabin air sucks the moisture out your skin, leaving it tired, dry, and lackluster. To avoid dehydration when youâre up in the air, drink coconut water. Its rich with vitamins and electrolytes that will keep your skin hydrated. So, buy coconut water from the nearest convenience or grocery store and guzzle it down the night before your flight. Bring some on board if you can. 2. Downsize Your Makeup and Skincare Essentials You donât have to ditch your skincare routine when you travel. Decant all your holy grail serums and creams in travel-sized containers you can easily store in your carry-on bag. Secure it inside a ziplock bag to avoid any disastrous leaks. At the same time, prepare a small pouch where you put only the essential makeup items. 3. Pamper Yourself Treat yourself with a relaxing massage before you get stuck in a plane for hours. Go to a spa the night before your flight. Itâs best if you avail a treatment which helps lock in moisture in your skin. Another option is to use reclining massage chairs in airport lounges (if your airport has it). [RELATED: 5 Solo Female Travel Ideas] In-Flight 1. Remove Your Makeup By the time you reach your seat on the plane, you should remove all your makeup. Use wet wipes to completely remove the products on your face. Do your skincare routine afterward. 2. Wear an Eye Mask Thereâs nothing much to do in an airplane so catch some Zâs. Wear an eyemask to help you fall asleep. It will block any light which disturbs your sleep cycle. If you get enough sleep, you wonât feel super tired. 3. Wear Light, Smudge-Proof Makeup You got on the plane looking fab, you will get off the plane looking fresh. Apply a light makeup about an hour before the plane lands. Just stick to the essentialsâ"neat brows, tinted moisturizer, powder, and lip balm. Keep it au naturel. ?? Youâll be fine because you donât look like a hot mess!

Playgirl Magazine Star Gives Personal Branding Advice - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Playgirl Magazine Star Gives Personal Branding Advice - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Madison Hildebrand, who is a playboy, millionaire real estate mogul, author and much more. Madison explores various topics from a very unique angle, including passion, perception and of course, brand. We can learn a lot from someone who has been in the public eye in ways that Madison has, yet still remain true to ourselves and our own special personal brand. What are some triggers that might help someone activate their own passion? What might help deactivate it? Your passion should spark excitement. It begins with accepting what makes you feel good. Fear, on the other hand, can deactivate it. Or complacency with routine. How were you able to build your brand, from real-estate to reality TV and now a book? What lessons have you learned along the way and whats next for you? Building my brand started with a certain high-end image. Everything with my name on it had to carry a certain brand image, including the car I drove and the clothes I wore. Next, my integrity is the foundation to my brand. My book and my appearance on reality TV are honest and real. That image was important to me. If someone Googles your name, the second result is your MySpace page. Your page contains pictures of you in Playgirl Magazine amongst others. Between everything else you do, has this had a positive or negative impact on your personal brand? (Smile). Well, even my appearance in Playgirl Magazine was as tasteful as possible, given the publication. Having my sexuality exploited on Million Dollar Listing allowed me to have a little fun with this photo shoot as well. I think there may have been a few people who were offended by my photos, but they should not look if they dont want to make a judgment. We all live once, I have no regrets, life is too short not to have a little frisky business here and there. What are your five essential principles to finding your passion? The five essential principles to finding your passion begin with yourself. 1) Make a list of the things you love to do. Then write next to each of those why you love to do those things. Look for similarities and try to draw some conclusions. 2) Next, ignore negative people and attitudes. Focus only on what is coming from within your body and mind. 3) Third, dont define failure. If you dont have a definition of failure, then there is nothing to fear. 4) Fourth, seek out positive situations and opportunities that may be connected with your passion(s). 5) Lastly, persevere and DO your passion. Make it happen and be ready for change. How do you go about forming your own mission statement? Why is it important? Think of your mission statement as your identity. It is critical to write it down so you know what makes your brand different from others. It should encompass all aspects of your life, beliefs, and characteristics. It should portray who you are and who you would like to become. Madison Hildebrand is the author of Activate YOUR Passion, Create YOUR Career: No matter who you are. He is achieving extraordinary goals in record-breaking time. Hildebrand, star of Bravos hit reality series Million Dollar Listing, is Malibus most wanted real estate mogul. Over the past 30 months, Hildebrand has sold over 80 million dollars in celebrity real estate earning him the self-proclaimed title King of Malibu and has been recognized in the top 2% of agents in the Coldwell Banker International family as well as recently earning the title of Top Producing New Agent at the Coldwell Banker Malibu West Office.

Is procrastination incapacitating your career - Hire Imaging
Is procrastination incapacitating your career - Hire Imaging The people I help with job search or career management are bright folks! When they are contemplating change, no vision is too great; no dream is too big. Self-reflection and self-assessment can truly be a life metamorphosis. I really love having the privilege of working with my diverse and wonderful clients as they dig deep into what makes them tick. Where might that fit be? And then the big P word occursâ"not uncommon. Procrastination hampers the âgo get itâ phase. Are you stuck in Procrastination mode? While insight into your purpose, values and goals is essential to move toward career success as youâve defined it, insight without action is little help. Itâs scary to ignite changeâ"to call people you donât know and ask for help; to ask for a raise; to be the first to step in and resolve workplace conflict. Most of my clients have experienced fear, apprehension, doubt, anxiety and confusionâ"sometimes all in this emotional suite. Taking risks and exploring options is scary stuff. But procrastination is self-sabotage at its finest. Negative thoughts foster disabling actions. And then what happens? Nothing. Exactly my point! Iâve used the mnemonic BARAT with clients to help them get unstuck from paralyzing procrastination. I hope it can help you get from the thinking and planning stages to the doing stage! BARAT B = Take Baby Steps Start with a specific goal rather than a large-scale goal. âI will call Jack Frost, the lead given me by Tom today. Tom said Wednesday mornings are best, so Iâll call Jack at 10:00 a.m. I know Tom has given Jack a heads up, so Iâll be prepared with my positioning statement.â This will serve you much better than âI will make 10 networking calls on Wednesdayâ or even more globally, âI will make 30 calls this week.â Psychologists call this âchunkingâ. You split concepts into small pieces or âchunksâ of informationâ"in this case your to-do lists or action plans. My client Joan had a delightful way of visualizing the process that I love! She said, âI think of coming face to face with a big rock right in front of the opening I need to cross to reach my goal. I take a pick and chip away. Each task is a chunk coming off bit by bit. And finally, that rock is down to a pebble and I walk through!â A = Act Right Now Inertia breeds inertia. Do something! One small step is better than no step. I love the mantra, âThe journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.â Take that first single step. I canât tell you how many times Iâve awakened at 4:30 a.m. not wanting to venture out into the elements and traffic to exercise at my health club. My change of attitude happens way before I get to class. It typically flows over me as I hop in the car and pop one of my favorite CDs in the slot! This morning I was coaching my client Jamey. She has struggled with procrastination in the course of our work together. Last Thursday, she took the âActâ to heart and decided enough was enough. Her one act was to set up a LinkedIn account and start learning its power. She made 32 connections and through one of them, had a networking coffee, which generated some leads. Ahhhh!! R = Record Your Goals Thinking about your goals is important. But they can fly right out of your brain into thin air if not written down. Putting your goals on paper or recording them on whatever computer or mobile device you refer to, will give them substance and give you something to look forward to. And donât make logging your goals into a major stressor because you might not accomplish them all. The very act of recording and re-evaluating helps you move forward. A = Are Your Goals Attainable? Is your goal rational and reachable? Have you done your homework to make sure itâs feasible before diving head first? My client Joe had his heart set on obtaining quality assurance jobs in manufacturing where the clear pattern for criteria included Six Sigma credentials. When he researched the ramifications of obtaining the trainingâ"costs, time, etc., he realized he did not have the time nor finances (six kids keeping him hopping, a wife battling cancer and two kids in college) to do it in the original timeframe he had hoped for. While this type of realization can obviously be disappointing, it also helps you reevaluate what steps and action you CAN take. Elimination is another way of making choices. Joe shifted his energy into staying in his current position with its very good healthcare package. His goalsâ"and action, morphed into that which kept him on the radar at work to make a near-future proposal for a raise. T = Analyze the Time If your goal is recorded but out there floating so to speak, how will you plan to achieve it? Write down your Goals âNeedsâ List. Write down why theyâre important and order them. Then, honestly assess each goal to figure out a timeline. Some goals are short range. Picking up that phone to call that lead on a Wednesday morning is the former; Joeâs decision to obtain Six Sigma down the line (if he chooses to), is long-term. Know the difference and plan accordingly. If you want to find a new position or make changes in your current job, stop beating yourself up if youâve been procrastinating. Thatâs just another procrastination symptom. It delays things. Go take that one step, do that one thing. Whatâs the worst that can happen? I can tell you one thing. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. Photo: hang_in_there
